Lender Control
Lender Control gives you additional flexibility over how Ownwell estimates mortgage opportunities by allowing you to exclude specific lenders from opportunity calculations.
By default, Ownwell includes all lenders available in Lender Spotlight to maximize opportunity coverage and surface meaningful insights. Lender Control is designed for brokers who want opportunity estimates to better reflect their lender access or placement strategy.
There’s no single right way to use Ownwell.
Some brokers prefer to keep estimates as broad as possible, while others need to account for specific lender access or business constraints. Lender Control gives you the flexibility to choose what works best for you.
Why Lender Control Exists
Ownwell’s default calculations are intentionally broad. They are designed to:
Highlight meaningful market opportunities.
Encourage client engagement and conversation.
Keep homeowners aware of trends that matter to them.
Support long-term relationship building.
For many brokers, this approach works extremely well.
Some brokers, however, have genuine lending constraints. They may not have access to every lender, work within a specific lending panel, or need opportunity estimates to reflect how they place mortgages.
Lender Control exists for those brokers. It allows you to align Ownwell's opportunity calculations more closely with how you already operate, without changing the homeowner experience or the core value of the monthly digest.
What Lender Control Lets You Do
Lender Control allows you to exclude specific lenders from being used when Ownwell estimates mortgage opportunities.
By default, Ownwell includes all lenders available in Lender Spotlight.
You can exclude lenders when:
Certain lenders are not accessible to your business.
You don't work with a particular lender under any circumstances.
You want opportunity estimates to reflect known placement constraints.
Ownwell already filters lenders by province automatically, so you don't need to exclude lenders that simply aren't available where you operate.
Use Lender Exclusions Sparingly
Lender Control is designed as a targeted exclusion tool rather than a preferred lender selector.
💡 Best Practice
Don't reduce your lender list to just the 7 or 8 lenders you regularly work with.
Ownwell is designed to surface the best opportunities for your clients.
Sometimes that opportunity may come from a lender outside your usual panel. If the rate is competitive and the lender is a good fit, it could be an excellent opportunity to better serve your client while also building a relationship with a new lender.
As a general rule, only exclude lenders you genuinely cannot or will not place business with.
How This Affects What Homeowners See
From a homeowner's perspective, the experience remains simple and consistent.
Homeowners never see:
Individual lender names.
Which lenders you've excluded.
Details of how opportunity calculations are performed.
Lender Control improves how Ownwell estimates opportunities without changing the homeowner experience.
What they do see:
Interest savings estimates that better reflect your lending strategy.
Insights that feel relevant and credible.
Clear, confident guidance supported by your expertise.
Who Lender Control Is For
Lender Control is well suited for brokers who:
Want opportunity estimates to reflect their lender access.
Have known lender or placement constraints.
Prefer opportunity calculations that align with how they do business.
Want flexibility in how Ownwell supports their specific client conversations rather than an open consultation.
Other brokers may prefer to leave all lenders available and use client conversations to determine the best lending solution. Both approaches work well, and Lender Control gives you the option to choose.
If you don't have any specific lender restrictions, Ownwell's default configuration usually provides the broadest coverage of opportunities.
How to customize your lender preferences

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this apply to my entire database?
Yes. Lender Control is an account-wide setting.
Do homeowners see which lenders I've excluded?
No. Homeowners never see lender names, excluded lenders, or how opportunity calculations are configured.
Will opportunities update when I change my lender exclusions?
Yes. Current and future opportunity calculations will reflect your active lender exclusions.
Should I only keep my preferred lenders?
No. We recommend using lender exclusions only when you genuinely cannot or will not place business with a lender. Leaving more lenders available generally results in broader opportunity coverage and may help uncover opportunities you might not otherwise consider.
How much does it cost?
Lender Control is included free on every Ownwell plan.
